They are two vertically arranged disc-shaped stones that are made of emery, a hard, abrasive rock.The grains are fed into the center of the top stone, which is rotated by a motor or other power source. As the top stone rotates, the grains are ground against the stationary bottom stone, which is grooved to aid in the grinding process.
